Review by Simon "Chief" Varszeghy

Only The Strong is a single player Boom level by Sascha Müller for Doom 2.  Set around a castle the story goes something along the lines of the Doom Marine getting a little too adventurous for his own good... apparently the Doom Marine is getting bored of just killing hordes of demons (according to Sascha). Personally, I never get sick of the sight of an imp splattering.

This level is a change from the usual tight corridor tech base style of maps that seem so popular.  Only the Strong is mainly a wide open outdoor level, but also contains some nicely done indoor areas.  Although the Doom engine can easily handle maps of this kind, it's usually impossible to have both large outdoor areas and detail together, and this level is no exception.

The layout is quite clever, some areas and objects throughout the level seem to have no point, but that all adds to the fun of exploring the level.  Don't get me started on the puzzles... some had me stuck for long periods of time but it's a good feeling when you finally figure them out.  The architecture and texturing seemed to get better as the level progressed.  Speaking of textures, there are tones of new ones in there, and the theme varies a lot throughout the level... so you won't get lost.

Early on in the level when your armour is low, the chaingunners and shotgun guys are incredibly annoying, so search out the green armour.  There isn't really enough ammo on Ultra Violence I thought, although you can get the BFG quite easily it's not much help.  Watch out for traps... this level shows just how hard 4 or 5 imps can be if it's in a small room.  You'll find most of Doom 2's monsters lurking around... and there are lots of demons so get your fists ready.

I have to admit that Only the Strong isn't the type of level I prefer.  Too much exploring and puzzles for my liking, plus it's very hard just staying alive.  Having said that, it is easy to see that a lot of effort has gone into its design, and it's definitely something different and original.  Good luck finishing it.
